Erick Khan and Mark Sultan, better known as The King Khan & BBQ Show (there’s no evidence that Khan is of noble blood, by the way), have made a name for themselves by doing two thing: putting out great records and putting on even greater shows.  Their lo-fi, punk sound often results in comparisons to fellow garage rockers and contemporaries the Black Lips, and the similarities are there.  But unlike any of their garage rock contemporaries (of which there’s been an exponential increase lately), Sultan and Khan will fool you into thinking you’re listening to a classic 60′s doo-wop jam.  That is until you realize half the stuff they sing about would never get on the waves, either in the 60′s or the 2000′s.  With classics like “Waddlin’ Around”, “Zombies”, and “Animal Party”, the duo has made a name for itself as the face (and inventors) of unabashed garage-punk-doo-w0p.  In November of ’09 they released Invisible Girl their third album, and IF’s Conor Berigan met up with them at Mad Planet in Milwaukee, WI.  We thought long and hard about editing the interview or simply transcribing it, but we decided the only way to give you a true taste Khan and Sultan’s wacky personalities was to give you the uncut version.  And we think they wouldn’t have it any other way.  Check out the video interview below… (note: the band about which they’re talking at the beginning is Godspeed…You Black Emporer)

Thank you to Annie Stutzman for taping the interview and for her great mayonnaise discussion.
