“I want it to sound like we’re Cuban or Cambodian kids, and we’re wearing berets and we’re walking through an alley and we stumble upon this band, and it explodes into this crazy sing-along,”

MMJ frontman Jim James told the rest of his troupe before recording their sixth studio album Circuital, due May 31st from ATO. It’s an eccentrically ambitious sentiment from the characteristically no nonsense Louisville, KY jam band. As seen hitherto, the title track‘s familiar, jangly groove doesn’t kick in until after a long, cavernous, minimalistic intro. “Holding on to Black Metal” keeps that chilling sensation nominally, but in substance offers something more similar to the Vietnamese soul James set out to reproduce. The latest release is certainly the most haunting of the three. See for yourself below how it fits James’ grandiose enterprise.
